This morning started with a small win.
I went to the gym even though I did not want to.
I did not feel like it. I had a busy day ahead and it would have been easy to skip it. But I went anyway and I was proud of myself for it. And it got me thinking about how often in life we are faced with things we do not want to do but know we should.
The Power of Doing What Is Hard
There are so many moments in life where we rely on how we feel in the moment. But the truth is, our feelings are not always reliable.
Sometimes:
- We do not feel like working out
- We do not feel like getting up early
- We do not feel like handling responsibilities
But those are often the exact things that move us forward.
When you choose to do what you are supposed to do even when you do not feel like it, you are building a kind of discipline that pays off over time.
It Is Like a Muscle
I like to think of it as a muscle.
Every time you push through and do the right thing anyway, you strengthen that muscle. And the more you use it, the easier it becomes the next time you are faced with a similar situation.
It does not mean it will always be easy, but it will become more natural.
Teaching This Lesson at Home
This is something I try to teach my kids as well.
This morning, my son was not exactly excited to go back to school after spring break. He did not feel like going and I completely understood that feeling.
But sometimes in life, we have to do things we do not want to do and that is okay.
We went anyway.
And just like I knew I would feel better after getting my workout in, I knew he would feel good at the end of the day after showing up and doing what he needed to do.
The Reward Is in the Follow Through
That feeling of accomplishment is powerful.
It is not just about checking something off a list. It is about proving to yourself that you can follow through, even when it is hard.
That builds confidence, resilience, and character.
Your Feelings Are Not Always Facts
One of the biggest lessons in all of this is simple but important.
Your feelings will lie to you.
They will tell you to stay comfortable, to avoid effort, to take the easy route. But growth does not happen there.
Growth happens when you take action anyway.
