Life has a way of reminding us just how quickly time passes.
As I write this, I’m on a plane headed to Nashville with my family to celebrate a very special milestone. My oldest daughter, Elise, is turning 21 on the Fourth of July, and we’re making the trip with family and friends to celebrate. One of the highlights we’re looking forward to is spending an evening at the iconic Grand Ole Opry.
As excited as I am for this vacation, I couldn’t help but reflect on a piece of advice that completely changed the way I think about family time.
The Best Investment Isn’t Always Financial
A few years ago, my family was staying at a friend’s vacation rental when I called him with a question. I was debating whether a local zipline adventure was worth the expensive ticket price.
His response has stayed with me ever since.
“If you’re interested in it, what does the cost matter? The memories will be worth it. You can always make more money, Janine. Our kids rarely remember the material gifts we give them, but they will forever remember the experiences they shared with us on vacation.”
Those words shifted my perspective.
Since then, I’ve made it a priority to invest in experiences rather than things. As a parent, I’ve realized that the opportunities to have everyone together become fewer as our children grow older. Now that two of my three children are adults, I treasure every chance we have to travel and make memories as a family.
It’s About Connection, Not the Destination
Creating meaningful memories doesn’t require an extravagant vacation or an expensive itinerary.
Some of my favorite family moments have been the simplest ones:
- Laughing around a campfire until our stomachs hurt.
- Spending an entire afternoon relaxing on the beach.
- Playing cards late into the night in a crowded hotel room.
Those are the moments that stay with you.
What matters most isn’t how much money you spend. It’s being present, putting away distractions, and enjoying uninterrupted time with the people you love.
Appreciating the Season You’re In
These trips mean even more to me because I remember a time when vacations simply weren’t possible.
When our children were younger, finances were tight, and family vacations were few and far between. Looking back on those years has given me a deep appreciation for the opportunities we’re fortunate enough to have today.
Every season of life brings different challenges and blessings. I’ve learned to be grateful for each one.
Taking Time Away Makes Me Better at What I Do
As a real estate professional, I’m passionate about serving my clients well. But I’ve also learned that taking time to recharge isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Stepping away from work allows me to return refreshed, inspired, and ready to give my clients my very best. Taking care of myself helps me better care for the people who trust me during one of the biggest decisions of their lives.
For me, family time isn’t just about making memories. It’s about filling my own cup so I can continue serving others with energy, focus, and gratitude.
Where Should We Go Next?
I’d love to hear from you.
What’s been your favorite family vacation? Is there a destination you think everyone should experience at least once?
Leave a comment or reach out and let me know. I’m always looking for ideas for our family’s next adventure.
Until then, I hope you’re finding time this summer to slow down, unplug, and create memories with the people who matter most. Those moments are truly priceless.
